Rev Canon Jeremy Haselock, Queen Elizabeth’s former chaplain, demanded Justin Welby’s resignation after learning that he had supported Ms. Vennells’ candidacy for the office of Bishop of London.
Following her announcement that she will immediately return her CBE in the wake of the Horizon IT scandal—which resulted in the false conviction of hundreds of sub-postmasters—this comes to pass.
We understand that Ms. Vennells, an ordained priest without a high status in the Church of England, was interviewed for the position.
Prior to stepping down in 2019—the year she was awarded the CBE for her services to charity and the Post Office—she was still the organization’s head.
According to a Telegraph source, “Justin was close to her” as well as “he was always very supportive of her when she was a member of the Church of England ethical investment advisory committee” .
Welby reportedly made an effort to get her, according to a second source. Paula was a self-supporting minister with no parish experience, thus it seems that the Crown Nominations Committee meeting in 2017 was extremely fortunate.
“Over the past 10 years the church has become more of a business model, so the whole idea of Paula Vennells being the supposed favourite candidate of Justin Welby links to the whole businessification of the church under his reign.”
Rev. Haselock, an associate priest currently, posted something on social media that the newspaper saw.
“An further instance of his utter lack of good judgment.
“His support of this woman for the position of episcopal office demonstrates how utterly ignorant he is of the requirements for that office.
“His complete and utter lack of understanding of the Church and its ministry is demonstrated by his disastrous decisions made during the pandemic and his complete failure to prioritize pastoral care.”
