According to several sources, a 30-year-old man was detained in Brazil on January 18 for his suspected involvement in the stabbing death of Brent Sikkema, a well-known art dealer in New York City, who was discovered dead at his Rio de Janeiro residence on January 16.
Hundreds of miles northwest of Rio de Janeiro, at a gas station in Uberaba, Alejandro Triana Trevez, a Cuban national, was apprehended by authorities, according to the Associated Press. Sikkema, 75, represented artists such as Sheila Hicks and Kara Walker and established the Sikkema Jenkins & Co. art gallery. According to images of the Daily Mail’s CCTV camera, he was last spotted on Jan. 13 when he got home just after 4:30 p.m.
But two hours or so before Sikkema went back home, another car had pulled up and was parked close to the house for several hours. A person who is thought to be the suspect got out of the automobile at 10:42 p.m. and strolled across the neighborhood, seemingly doing a survey, before getting back in the car ten minutes later. The suspect remained in the car for about five hours until getting out at 3:43 a.m. on January 14 and going inside
