On his tournament debut, Mohammed Kudus scored twice for Ghana; however, after Mohamed Salah was substituted late in the first half in Abidjan, record seven-time champions Egypt salvaged a draw through goals from Omar Marmoush and Mostafa Mohamed.
The nature of Salah’s issue is still unknown. I hope it’s not a major issue. Rui Vitoria, the head of Egypt, stated, “It is too early to say anything.” Following a 2-2 opening draw with Mozambique in Group B, Egypt showed incredible resiliency in the absence of their star attacker, taking advantage of two mistakes made by Ghana to secure another point. Egypt had previously fallen behind twice at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium.
Despite Kudus’ injured return, the Black Stars are in danger of losing in the group stage for the second time in a row after a shock 2-1 loss to Cape Verde in their opening match. The team has only won one of their last 11 AFCON games. Ghana coach Chris Hughton remarked, “Of course it’s very frustrating because I felt we deserved to win the game.”
