If Dabo Swinney retired, would Clemson football suffer the same consequences as Alabama?

Dabo Swinney has been Clemson Football’s head coach for a long time, which is fortunate for the team. Compared to most programs, he has had a lot less staff turnover throughout that time.

Nick Saban, the head coach of Alabama, had also been with his program for a very long time. Following his retirement last week, the athletic department of the Crimson Tide acted swiftly to appoint a new head coach.

In three days, they hired Kalen DeBoer from Washington. The Huskies are on their way to the national championship game thanks to DeBoer. For the most part, observers thought he was a superb hire.

Regardless of the opinions held by others on the DeBoer hiring, players have continued to choose to transfer to other programs.

Ever after Saban made his announcement, ten prominent players have accessed the link. Not to mention the twenty that were in the gateway before to Saban’s retirement.

The majority of the players that were already in the portal weren’t anticipated to have a significant impact on the Tide when they left, but the players who have left subsequently are a different story.

According to the 247Sports Composite, Julian Sayin was the quarterback with the best rating for the 2024 class. This past season, Caleb Downs was an All-American safety for Alabama as a rookie. According to 247, Isaiah Bond and Kadyn Proctor are both 5-star transfer prospects.

Only one of the ten exits has a rating of fewer than 4 stars on 247.

Many people were surprised by this because they thought Alabama’s program was too good to lose like this, even in the most unlikely situations. However, it shows how strongly some athletes feel their credentials are linked to the resumes of the coaches surrounding them.

It begs the question of what effect Swinney’s decision to retire or leave the program would have for Clemson supporters.
