The Red Wings’ January run is a result of their roster building.

DETROIT: The Detroit Red Wings have three goaltenders and seven NHL defensemen on their roster, which makes them slightly different from most teams.

Coach Derek Lalonde has had to make some difficult choices and have some awkward conversations as a result. But it has yielded benefits.

Their third goalie, Alex Lyon, who missed the first five games, has been the main man in goal the last three weeks while Ville Husso has been out. Their blue line depth and his play have bolstered the defense, which has resulted to a 7-1-1 run in January.
