Josh James, a right-handed reliever, was signed by the Cardinals to a minor league contract on Friday. After having season-ending surgery in 2022 to repair his right flexor tendon, the 30-year-old was non-tendered by the Astros and hasn’t pitched in the Majors in the last two seasons. CAA is his representative.
Before that injury, James was a hard-throwing but command-challenged middle reliever for portions of four seasons in the Houston bullpen who could miss a lot of bats. With 106 1/3 innings pitched in the major leagues, he has a 4.64 ERA, a tremendous strikeout percentage of 34.3%, and an unflattering walk rate of 13.2%. James’ heater had an average speed of 97.1 mph from 2018 to 2021, however in 2021 it dropped to 94.8 mph. His injuries restricted him to only 25
