Overly optimistic forecast for Tennessee’s defensive depth chart in 2024

The Tennessee football team reassembled on campus over the weekend for the start of spring semester classes and those exhausting early-morning sessions with the strength-and-conditioning staff. Although the team’s first game of 2024 is still more than seven months away, the offseason is already fully underway. Following a 9-4 campaign in 2023, the Vols are currently in what fourth-year head coach Josh Heupel refers to as the “first quarter” of the offseason, beginning the very early stages of their planning for the upcoming campaign. It’s a good moment for GoVols247 to release its much-too-early depth chart forecasts for the 2024 Vols, now on defense, with the largest round of roster movement behind us, winter workouts under way, and spring practice still several weeks away

At this point in the offseason, projecting depth charts usually involves rolling with the returning starters from the previous campaign and covering any holes left by departing players. In Tennessee’s situation, a 21-player recruiting class and eight transfer additions will balance out the 27 departures due to exhausted eligibility, the NFL Draft, or the transfer portal. The Vols have depth to rebuild and open starting slots on both sides of the ball, similar to many other teams.
