Why North Carolina Central and Alabama State were chosen for the 2024 Orange Blossom Classic

When media personality Scottay of Offscript TV broke the news that Alabama State and North Carolina Central would play in the Orange Blossom Classic, many HBCU football fans around the country questioned the decision. On his live show with guest Perry White, Scottay of Offscript TV himself disapproved of the announcement.

He declared, “I think this is a bad matchup.” “As a football fan, I detest it. I detest it to the core. All of NCCU is being rebuilt. Not even Davius Richard can sell tickets for you. I would have attended both [North Carolina A&T] and FAMU. Even with North Carolina A&T’s rebuild, you are talking about serious money and attention if you could have pulled off an Orange Blossom Classic matchup between FAMU and A&T.

When Florida A&M was still a MEAC school, the game between them and Jackson State was originally scheduled to be a MEAC/SWAC Challenge. But by switching leagues, they made the Orange Blossom Classic a game that needed to be won. To give themselves a few weeks’ notice, schools like to schedule their in-conference opponents later in the season. But the Orange Blossom Classic went from being a fun preseason showcase to a desperate attempt to get an advantage in the SWAC with a Week One clash that counted as a conference game.
