After trailing by 17 points at the half in the NFC Championship Game, Detroit’s defeat shattered a record set by the Green Bay Packers.
In the 2014 NFC Championship Game, Green Bay led the Seattle Seahawks by 16 points at the half. However, Seattle won 28–22 in overtime, and Green Bay lost. Unfortunately, the Packers fan base still recalls that game vividly.
Teams were 17-0 all-time in Championship Games when they held a 17-point lead or greater at halftime, like the Detroit Lions were doing against the San Francisco 49ers at the half. Detroit won the NFC North with a 12-5 season finale. In the end, the Lions lost this football game because of certain judgments they made.
Dan Campbell decided to go for it on a fourth-and-3 with Detroit trailing San Francisco 27-24 in the fourth quarter rather than try to kick a field goal. However, the play didn’t work out, and San Francisco scored a touchdown to end the game.
Indeed, with less than a minute remaining in the game, the Lions scored. On social media, some made jokes about how Brandon Bostick should have come out of retirement for the onside kick to help the Lions win it, but Packers supporters still have too much PTSD from that experience.
