Football, Tennessee: Nico Iamaleava, NIL, who put the Vols under investigation, receives clarification

Nico Iamaleava and Sprye Sports signed a contract in the beginning of 2022 that included a restricted transfer of his NIL rights. It could be argued to the NCAA that Spyre persuaded Iamaleava to enroll at Tennessee in some way.

Sprye explained in a statement that their cooperation was not intended to have any improper influence:

“There is no inducement of any kind in [the] agreement for [the] athlete to enroll at any school or join any athletic team,” attorney Tom Mars stated. According to reports, the arrangement complied properly with NCAA NIL regulations.

The NCAA’s regulations have drawn criticism. Specifically, on the organization’s handling of the new age, Tennessee Chancellor Donde Plowman stated the following:

According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Plowman stated, “The leaders of intercollegiate athletics owe it to student-athletes and their families to establish clear rules and to act in their best interest.” The university president went on to say that the NCAA’s “guidelines” on NIL were confusing and hard to follow.
