Goodman: Auburn seems to be more of a Saban fan now than Alabama

Following Nick sabans retirement, an unforeseen event occurred. Hugh Freeze of Auburn became the new unrepentant tyrant of the SEC when Alabama chose a coach whose reputation for fostering loyalty.

It’s hard for me to admit, but I kind of like it.

Freeze is finally proving at Auburn that he has what it takes to survive in the SEC, however it has taken some time. It has nothing to do with looking after the Auburn family. The goal is to succeed at all costs.

What has been going on at Auburn throughout Alabama’s change in leadership? The coach of Auburn was strategizing and planning while the Sabans were thinking about life after football in sunny South Florida. First, Freeze bid farewell to Zac Ethridge and Cadillac Williams, two Auburn legends. Freeze then added controversial assistant coach D.J. Durkin as a bonus hire.

It was straight out of the playbook of Saban.

Freeze is assembling a team that he believes offers Auburn the best opportunity to contend for a national championship by making a number of daring personnel adjustments. Supporters might not like the staff changes, but it won’t matter if Freeze can put Auburn in a position where it can compete with Georgia and Alabama at the start of this new era in football.
