
Guillermo Zuniga, 25, was placed on the roster for assignment by the St. Louis Cardinals in order to create space for Keynan Middleton. This hard-throwing reliever, who is young and has minor league options, fits the New York Mets’ offseason strategy perfectly. He’s worth looking at whether it’s a waiver claim or a trade.
It’s understandable why the Cardinals choose him above all of their alternatives. After posting a 4.77 ERA in Double-A the previous season, Zuniga’s 7.63 ERA in Triple-A. At 5.9 walks out of every 9, the control became much more uncontrollable. Despite being high, his strikeout rate isn’t mind-numbing.
It’s possible that Zuniga is merely another strong thrower who adds nothing else to the game. In contrast
