The Green Bay Packers have brought on Derrick Ansley, a former Los Angeles Chargers coach, to serve as their new coordinator of the passing game, according to ESPN’s Rob Demovsky. Ansley was previously the Chargers’ defensive coordinator, a non-play-calling position, until head coach Brandon Staley was fired in the middle of the 2023 season. This summer, he was also interviewed for the position of defensive coordinator with the New York Giants, which was filled on Monday by Shane Bowen, a former defensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans.
Ansley, a former assistant to Nick Saban, was the defensive backs coach for Alabama in 2017 when they won a national championship. Prior to joining the Chargers, he has only coached defensive backs in the NFL for the 2018 season.
Ryan Downard, the defensive backs coach, will maintain his position, according to Demovsky, while Ansley will only refer to himself as the passing game coordinator. In addition, Demovsky said that under the Packers’ 4-3 scheme, Jason Rebrovich, the team’s longtime pass rush specialist and outside linebackers coach, will serve as the defensive line coach. Green Bay signed Vince Oghobaase, a former defensive line coach under Hafley at Boston College, to be the assistant defensive line coach.
