Charles Barkley’s appearance on television during a major athletic event at Auburn University is a must. On Wednesday night, “Sir Charles” attended the “Iron Bowl of Basketball” at Neville Arena and spent part of the second half chatting with ESPN’s Karl Ravech and Jimmy Dykes. The legendary Auburn football player had a lot to say, as he usually does, including referring to recently retired Nick Saban as the “greatest college football coach ever.”
But one thing he said will probably irritate supporters and former students of his alma mater.
Barkley remarked, “I’m probably going to get in trouble for saying this, but we’re like the stepchild.” “We will never be the state of Alabama. We want to defeat them if we play them in anything.
Hurt. While some Auburn supporters sometimes make fun of their university by calling it Alabama’s “little brother,” calling it a “stepchild” seems excessive.
Positively, Barkley seemed to have accurately predicted what would happen during Wednesday’s game, which Auburn won 99-81. Johni Broome, the big man for the Tigers, answered his demand for a big game by scoring 24 points, grabbing 7 rebounds, and blocking 5 shots against what he described as a thin Crimson Tide front line.
