Ryan Grubb is returning to his native Washington.
Grubb is now anticipated to become the offensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks of the NFL, sources have told Matt Zenitz of 247Sports. Originally, Grubb was supposed to succeed Kalen DeBoer as Alabama’s offensive coordinator.
The 47-year-old native of Iowa has assisted DeBoer during his head coaching tenure at Sioux Falls, Fresno State, and, most recently, Washington, where the Huskies have gone 25-3 and placed in the top 15 in both scoring offense and overall offense during the last two seasons.
With an offensive ranking No. 12 in the country in total offense and No. 13 in scoring, Washington went 14-1 last season, won the Pac 12, and advanced to the College Football Playoff national championship game. Grubb worked closely with Michael Penix Jr., a finalist for the Heisman Trophy, as the quarterbacks coach.
Prior to taking on the role of coordinator at Fresno State and Washington, Grubb coached running backs and receivers at South Dakota State, offensive line and run game coordinator at Sioux Falls, and offensive line at both Eastern Michigan and Fresno State.
He is the most recent college coach to leave for the professional ranks and head to the NFL. The list includes, among others, Jeff Hafley, the head coach of Boston College who is currently with the Green Bay Packers, and Jim Harbaugh, the head coach of Michigan who left his position to join the Los Angeles Chargers.
Grubbs’ hiring was never publicly publicized by Alabama, but in recent weeks, he has been spotted recruiting. DeBoer will now have to find someone to take his place.
