The CEO of CEO Play Network Africa, Charles Okpaleke, tweeted on Thursday, “Say hello to the first Nollywood game app.”
I downloaded the game after reading the tweet; it is presently accessible on the App Store and Google Playstore, and has received roughly a thousand downloads. It is named after the well-known 2002 comedy Aki Na Ukwa, which was about two mischievous brothers and starred experienced Nigerian actors Chinedu Ikedieze and Osita Iheme. This game is arguably the first with a Nollywood theme.
Leading Nigerian film producer Play Network Studio worked with Blueportal Software to make the video game. The studio developed a remake of the 2002 film, which Netflix licensed in 2021, in addition to acquiring the rights to Aki and Pawpaw in 2021.
“Film Fellow with Inside Nollywood Adedimeji Quayyim stated that this is a hint to something important in Nigeria’s creative sector: the need for a fusion of Nollywood and the gaming industry.” “Much could be learnt from how Afrobeats is making headway in this regard, as seen in how Burna Boy’s track on the Grand Theft Auto game or Davido’s verse on PlayStation is making waves.”
Today I participated in my first-ever Aki and Pawpaw Epic Run game.
I’m sure you’ve played the endless runner game Subway Surfers if you’ve played mobile games. Alright! The only difference between Aki and Pawpaw Epic Run is that it takes place in Nigeria, with settings in Sambisa (Borno), Lasgidi (Lagos), and the East.
