Atlanta has officially won the race by signing…

Julio Teherán spent the first nine years of his major league career with the Atlanta Braves.

Teherán hopes to play for his fourth squad in five years. The Baltimore Orioles are the American League team giving Teherán another chance in 2024, having recently signed him to a minor league contract with an invitation to Spring Training.

Teherán did not pitch in the majors in 2022, following a couple of mediocre seasons after leaving Atlanta. Many believed his career had ended until the Brewers gave him another opportunity last year. Teherán took full advantage of his 11 starts with the Brew crew.

Last season, he had a solid 4.40 ERA, 4.67 xFIP, and 0.3 fWAR in 71.2 innings, according to Fangraphs. This features back-to-back games versus the Braves in late July. The first was a standout six-inning performance with three hits. Julio’s second start, at Truist Park, did not go as well. In that game, he pitched five innings and gave up nine earned runs, eleven hits, and three

Those figures are absolutely acceptable for organizational depth or fifth starter type pitchers. The former top Braves prospect will now try to make his way into the Orioles’ backup rotation in 2024.

This is a much-needed addition for Baltimore, given the bad news that one of their top pitchers, Kyle Bradish, will begin the season on the injured list due to a sprained UCL. If Teherán is able to break camp with the major league club, he will be paid $2 million.
