After adding cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting in free agency, Arizona Cardinals’ general manager Monti Ossenfort addressed another significant worry.
Bilal Nichols, a former Bears and Raiders defensive tackle, has signed a three-year, $21 million contract with the Cardinals. Of this amount, $14 million is guaranteed over the next three seasons.
Nichols had 48 tackles in 17 games for Las Vegas last season, including 25 solo tackles. The former fifth-round pick has been a dependable option for both the Bears and the Raiders, appearing in 94 games over six seasons in the NFL.
Nichols, who stands 6’4″ and weighs 313 pounds, is a powerful presence on the defensive line, using aggressive hands and keen eyes in the backfield to disrupt opposing run attacks. Nichols demonstrates a strong ability to anchor into his legs and use bullrush movements to eat up blocks and open up the second level for run opportunities.
Ossenfort has demonstrated, just a few hours into the legal tampering period, that he intends to address the defense’s concerns. With the signings of cornerback Murphy-Bunting and now Nichols, Ossenfort has demonstrated that strengthening one of the league’s weakest defenses in 2023 is a top priority this offseason.
