They were most certainly still in the tie at the second leg stage, having played out a 2-2 draw away from home in the first leg.

But it was Benfica who came out on top at Ibrox, clinching a 1-0 win on Thursday (14 March), thus securing a 3-2 aggregate victory.

Despite the loss, Rangers captain James Tavernier produced yet another standout display, with his teammates failing to replicate his heroics under the lights in Glasgow.

As per Sofascore, the right-back won eight of his 10 duels, and made a match-high six tackles, five clearances and two interceptions in a superb defensive display.

But his efforts didn’t end there, with Tavernier also making four key passes, more than any other player across both sides.

The captain has constantly led by example over the years, with the Ibrox club really fortunate to have had such a player among their ranks for so long.

Tavernier must now show his leadership qualities once more between now and the end of the season, with plenty of silverware still on the cards for the Gers.

Up next in their treble pursuit is a Scottish Premiership trip to Dundee on Sunday (17 March), with the Glasgow outfit currently two points ahead of city rivals Celtic in the standings.
