Philadelphia Phillies Manager Rob Thomson said that Zack Wheeler will be the opening day starting pitcher, as per Alex Coffey.

Aaron Nola has been the starter the past six Opening Day games for the Phillies. Nola endorsed the move.

“Wheels should take it,” Nola said. “He’s earned it, man.”

In four seasons with the Phillies, Wheeler is 43-25 with a 3.06 ERA in 101 games. He has 675 strikeouts in 629.1 innings pitched.

Wheeler signed a three-year, $126 million contract extension on March 4. He is the Phillies unquestioned ace and a big game pitcher. Wheeler has definitely earned the Opening Day nod.
