iously revealed that Zack Wheeler will start the home opener, with Aaron Nola set to pitch Game 2 of the series. Ranger Suárez will begin the season in the third position in the rotation, starting Game 3 of the series against the Braves.

It’s not surprising considering Suárez has been outstanding in his four spring training appearances. Suárez has not given up a run in four starts or 15 innings, striking out 16 batters while allowing only four walks and five hits. Rangers will now seek to carry these results into the regular season next week.

With worries surrounding starter Taijuan Walker’s preparedness to start the season in the rotation as he works to regain his velocity, Suárez’s numbers on the mound have allowed Thomson to breathe a sigh of relief as he prepares his rotation for the season. Thomson, speaking with Steve Kornacki of MLB.com, praised Suárez’s performance thus far in spring training.

“His command,” Thomson informed Kornacki. “One, he is healthy. But his command has been exceptional. He had all of his pitches going today, and the hitters had a difficult time seeing [at twilight]. But his material was excellent.”

“He’s got all his pitches going,” Thomson added. “Breaking ball is good.”
