Following a difficult SEC opening round, the Crimson Tide, Volunteers, and Aggies need a successful weekend.

With eight schools qualified for the  Florida lost to Colorado on a last-second shot, South Carolina lost to Oregon, and the Mississippi State Bulldogs fell short against the Michigan State Spartans. But the two biggest upsets of the weekend was Auburn and Kentucky losing to 13th-seeded Yale and 14th-seeded Oakland.
Greg Sankey expressed confidence in the Conference going into the tournament, saying ahead of time that “we are giving away highly competitive opportunities for automatic qualifiers, and I think that pressure is going to rise as we have more competitive basketball leagues at the top end because of expansion.” The SEC and the Big 12 also tied for the most bids going into the tournament.

If Alabama, Tennessee, and Texas A&M lost, this tournament would appear to be a huge black mark against the SEC, especially given Greg Sankey’s advocacy for the conference. One of the clubs in Oakland that Sankey is arguing should accept a bid defeated one of the best teams in the conference.

Seventh-seeded Texas is the team that the Tennessee Volunteers will play in the SEC Tournament’s second round. The Aggies will play top-seeded Houston on Sunday, while the Alabama basketball team will play the 12th-seeded Grand Canyon Antelopes.
