KNOXVILLE, Tennessee – In front of a record 5,677 spectators on Sunday afternoon at Lindsey Nelson Stadium, No. 7/8 Tennessee baseball team defeated No. 17 Ole Miss 15–4 run-rule. The game was nearly a carbon repeat of Friday’s series opener.
In the rubber game on Sunday, the Big Orange finished with the same total of runs (13), hits (five), and home runs (five) as they did on Friday night. They received contributions from players all over the lineup, as four of them finished with multiple hits and five of them with multiple RBIs.
In the bottom of the first, Kavares Tears gave UT an early lead with a two-run home run as he crushed a 2-0 pitch over the wall in right center.
The Vols launched their offensive assault with a five-run third inning that included a two-run home run by Christian Moore and a three-run blast by Dylan Dreiling to make it 7-1 after the Rebels scored a run in the second to reduce the lead in half.
Tennessee added two more runs in the fourth and effectively won the game with a six-run fifth inning highlighted by a grand slam by Billy Amick. Amick tied a career high with five RBIs on Sunday after registering two singles and a quiet first two games of the series.
With three hits apiece and five runs scored and five RBIs combined, Tears and Dean Curley led the squad. Blake Burke extended his hitting streak to 15 games and his on-base streak to 23 games with two more hits, including his SEC-leading 14th double of the season.
Righthander Nate Snead, a sophomore, set a career high with six strikeouts in 4.2 innings of work, and did not allow a walk to secure the victory and raise his record to 5-1. Zander Sechrist, a senior lefty, started the Vols’ first SEC game and gave the squad some relief by striking out three batters in 2.1 innings.
