DETROIT (AP) — When the Detroit Lions discovered that Cameron Sutton had a Florida domestic abuse warrant out for him, the defensive back was at the team’s Allen Park training facility.
At the time, Sutton, 29, was speaking with team staff when Lions President Rod Wood told WJBK-TV Fox 2 on Monday. The staffers recommended Sutton to give himself in to the authorities.
Wood told the station, “We found out about the warrant at the same time as everyone else on social media.” We had a conversation with Cam because he was in our building. We located him. With our strength crew, he was down. He sort of just happened to show up for the workout.
Following the discovery of the warrant, Sutton was released by the Lions on March 21.
Finding Sutton, a seven-year veteran who recently concluded his first season with the Lions and helped them make it to the NFC championship game for the first time in thirty-two years, is something the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office in Florida, which covers Tampa, has sought for assistance with.
The third-degree felony of domestic battery by strangulation, which carries a maximum five-year prison sentence, is the subject of the warrant. According to the sheriff’s office, Sutton might be operating a Jeep Grand Wagoneer with a Florida license plate.
