Based on weather forecasts for Thursday, it appeared likely that Philadelphia Phillies fans would have to wait an extra day to begin the 2024 regular season. The Phillies and Major League Baseball made their decision quickly, which is good news. The Opening Day game against the Atlanta Braves has been postponed until Friday, the team announced on Wednesday afternoon.

The Phillies provided sound, if unfortunate, justification for the decision in a social media announcement.

According to a statement from the team, Phillies Executive Vice President David Buck stated, “We have elected to move our home opener with the Braves to Friday due to the anticipated rain on Thursday.” “After conferring with multiple weather services and Major League Baseball, this decision was taken. We can reschedule the game because of the Friday open date.”

At least now that supporters have been worrying all week, we know to keep our Friday afternoons free. The Phillies and NL East rival Braves will play for a 3:05 p.m. ET first pitch on Friday, March 29, 24 hours later than originally scheduled. This game was originally scheduled as a built-in off day for just such an occasion.
