CBS Philadelphia – Opening Day at Citizens Bank Park has finally arrived. The Phillies’ game against the Atlanta Braves has generated a lot of excitement, but Thursday’s rain put a kink in their preparations.
Fortunately, there is a lot of sunshine, a moderate temperature, and most significantly, no rain today. The wind, however, is something we do have.
Anticipate early afternoon temperatures above 50 degrees under bright sky if you choose to tailgate.
There will probably be steady northwest winds before the first pitch at 3:05 p.m., ranging from 10 to 20 mph with a few stronger gusts. However, as soon as the game begins, the wind will kick up, with some gusts reaching speeds of above 35 mph.
Hold those napkins and the food and drinks a little closer if you’re going to the stadium; otherwise, they’ll fly everywhere.
In relation to the wind, the game will be impacted by those gusts. The players are challenged by strong wind, which makes it more difficult to hit a home run, particularly one that goes out of left field. With a northwest wind, players standing up to bat will be facing northeast, which could cause extra drag on the ball and cause it to veer to the right. In gusty weather like this, batters will have to hit the ball harder to score a home run.
That being said, Friday is looking like a great way to end the week if you can handle the wind today.
Forecast: A few showers on Saturday with a fast-moving system, then Easter Sunday will be dry and pleasant.
