Check out the Phillies’ 2023 soaring wild card banner!
For the first time, the Phillies qualified for the postseason in 2023 while failing to win the NL East division championship or the NL pennant.
In addition to the NL Champions receiving blue banners with white numbers and the division championship winners receiving cream-colored banners with blue numbers, the 1980 and 2008 World Series winning teams are recognized with red banners with white numerals.
The 2023 season didn’t match the mold of a season ending deserving of a banner; instead, it finished with a postseason appearance via the wild card that went to the NLCS.
Some questioned whether the Phillies would display a banner honoring the 2023 team’s achievements or save them for specific seasons. The Phillies opted for the former and will wear a powder blue uniform in 2023.
For the duration of the 2024 season, the flag will be flown at the top of Ashburn Alley. It’s unknown if the Phillies will celebrate numerous wild card seasons with a single banner or add extra wild card banners for seasons that don’t conclude with a pennant or World Series championship.
In their 141-year history, the Phillies have only made it to the playoffs 13 times; however, for the first 86 of those years, the sole route to entry was as the National League’s top record holder. While the 2023 squad deserves to be honored with a banner flying alongside the pennant winners and division champions, should their accomplishments be overlooked? Depending on your perspective.
