The Volunteers from Tennessee are still in the dance. On Friday night, Rick Barnes and his team defeated the Creighton Bluejays 82-75. Leading the way with 24 points was Dalton Knecht.
During an intense first half in which both teams swapped points, neither Tennessee nor Creighton was able to take the lead. After establishing their three-point shooting, the Bluejays would eventually lead 33-29; but, shortly before halftime, a Tennessee run, which featured a three from none other than Cameron Carr, would give the Volunteers the lead again.
Steven Ashworth of Creighton was a menace early on, making shot after shot to keep the team in the contest.
We knew Tennessee would have to make shots to keep pace with Creighton’s offense, and that’s exactly what the Vols were able to do. We also knew Dalton Knecht would need some help, and that’s exactly what he got, even with Santiago Vescovi sidelined due to the flu.
The result was an avalanche that began the second half. With a Zeigler three, a James jumper, Knecht hitting the paint, and yet another Zeigler three, Tennessee swiftly took control of the previously close game, leading them to a 55-39 advantage against Creighton.
But Creighton would stutter back. With about six minutes remaining, Baylor Scheierman would start to get the Bluejays back within three points.
