Late-inning surge pushes No. 4 Lady Vols past Auburn - Southeastern  Conference

AUBURN, Alabama The fourth-ranked Lady Vols lost to Auburn 4-1 at Jane B. Moore Field on Sunday, their first loss since February 25. This ended their 20-game winning run.

Additionally, Tennessee (28-5, 8-1 SEC) lost its 12-game winning run on the road.

On Sunday, Auburn (16-11-1, 3-9 SEC) got out to a quick start, scoring two runs in the first inning on a hit and an error.

Karlyn Pickens, a sophomore, had a rough start but eventually settled in and kept the Tigers off the score until the sixth.

In 5.1 frames, the right-hander allowed four hits, two walks, and three earned runs. Before getting replaced in the sixth inning for sophomore Charli Orsini, Pickens had struck out four that day.

Pickens accepted the defeat, her third of the year.

In the fourth inning, Katie Taylor was scored by Taylor Pannell’s RBI single to left, bringing Tennessee’s deficit to one.

Starting pitcher Maddie Penta of Auburn quieted the Lady Vol batters, allowing just one run in seven innings while scattering five hits. The senior achieved her eighth victory of the year with seven strikeouts and three walks.

Nelia Peralta’s triple to plate Makayla Packer in the sixth inning gave the Tigers two more insurance runs. Auburn’s last run of the afternoon came from a double later in the frame by Amelia Lech.
