The Miami Marlins have an 0-8 record as of the beginning of the 2024 season. Luis Arráez, an infielder, may be put up for trade by the team if things don’t improve, according to Ken Rosenthal and Dennis Lin of The Athletic. Are the Boston Red Sox a good place for the two-time Silver Slugger winner to land if that happens?
Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report examined Arráez’s possible destinations should Miami decide to let go of the 2023 MLB batting champion. Out of three honorable mentions, the Red Sox were listed as one.
The Red Sox could use a bat-to-ball hitter like Arraez, who has a 26.0 strikeout percentage so far this season, Rymer said. But Vaughn Grissom deserves to demonstrate his abilities because he won’t be out for long.
Grissom was acquired by Boston from the Atlanta Braves through an offseason transaction in December. They traded the 23-year-old to the Braves for starting pitcher Chris Sale as well as cash.
According to Spotrac, Arráez will make $10.6 million in 2024 and won’t be eligible for free agency until after the 2025 campaign.

Similar to the Marlins, Arráez’s 2024 campaign is off to a sluggish start. In his first 38 plate appearances, he has triple slashed, hitting.188/.316/.219. His most recent output, though, indicates he would significantly strengthen Boston’s regular lineup.
For the previous two years, Arráez has been the league’s top batsman in both seasons. According to Baseball-Reference, he had a.316 average with the Minnesota Twins in 2022 and a.354 average with the Marlins in 2023. During 2022–2023 and 1,220 plate appearances, the left-handed batter slashed a whopping.335/.384/.445. This consists of 159 runs scored, 118 RBI, 18 home runs, four triples, and 61 doubles. In addition, it produced two Silver Slugger Awards, two All-Star Game selections, and two top-15 rankings.
FanGraphs reports that Arráez’s career strikeout percentage is only 7.7%, despite his current 2024 strikeout rate of 15.8% due to a short sample size. His bat-to-ball prowess and ability to reach base would make him an ideal addition to manager Alex Cora’s starting lineup. Rafael Devers, the third baseman, might be able to shift down a spot and possibly receive more opportunities to score runs as well.
