Knoxville, Tennessee – No. 4/4 Tennessee continued to score runs in bunches with its 13th run-rule victory of the season, defeating Alabama A&M 20-2 in seven innings on Tuesday night at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
The Vols (27-6) saw 12 different players record one hit each, as a large number of players were given opportunities at the bat. Christian Moore, Ariel Antigua, Colby Backus, and Camden Bates all drove in three runs, while Cannon Peebles and Bradke Lohry each got two RBIs to lead the offense.
Moore and Antigua each hit a bases-clearing double, and Backus drove in three runs with a two-run homer and a bases-loaded walk. During UT’s nine-run sixth inning, Bates hit his first collegiate home run, which scored three runs.
The Big Orange used a variety of pitchers, each of whom pitched one inning. Freshman lefty Dylan Loy made his second start of the season, pitching a shutout first inning with two strikeouts to get the Vols off to a good start.
JJ Garcia was the first pitcher out of the bullpen, and he earned his first career win by retiring the side in order with two punchouts in the second inning.
Marcus Phillips, Austin Hunley, Brady Robertson, and Luke Payne each pitched one shutout inning.
Brycen Hammonds led Alabama A&M with two hits, while Blake Martin and Jared Tribett each had one RBI.
The Bulldogs (5-26) struggled on the mound, walking 13 and hitting five batters, while all four pitchers allowed five runs.
STAT OF THE GAME: With Tuesday’s triumph, UT improved to 9-0 in midweek games this season, including five run-rule victories, outscoring their opponents 101-19.
UP NEXT: This weekend, the Vols will meet the defending national champion LSU Tigers at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. The first pitch for Friday’s series opener is set for 7:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPNU.
