The quarterback room for the Las Vegas Raiders is not particularly inspiring. They can change that with a single pick in the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft, when they will select from the 13th slot overall. However, that does not appear to be ideal enough for Las Vegas to expect to land one of the three top quarterbacks in the draft class: Caleb Williams of the USC Trojans, Drake Maye of the North Carolina Tar Heels, and Jayden Daniels of the LSU Tigers.
Williams is now effectively a Chicago Bear, with the NFC North division team having the top choice in the draft via the Carolina Panthers. Another quarterback-needy team is picking immediately following the Bears, with the Washington Commanders coming in second. Even if the Bears and Commanders avoid Daniels, the New England Patriots, New York Jets, Minnesota Vikings, and Denver Broncos are among the other teams picking before the Raiders, and each of those franchises has a chance to land a quarterback based on present circumstances.
In other words, if the Raiders want to dramatically boost their chances of acquiring Daniels, whom Las Vegas head coach Antonio Pierce is close to and enthusiastic about, they must move up. And not just a couple of spots up the board; it should be as high as No. 2, from whence the Commanders will choose. The type of package that the Raiders should provide for such a position is also part of this strategy.
“The San Francisco 49ers moved up from No. 12 to No. 3 in the 2021 draft to choose Trey Lance. What’s the cost? In addition to trading first-round picks, the Niners offered the Miami Dolphins their first-round picks in 2022 and 2023, as well as a third-round pick in 2022.”
“Three first-rounders and a third-round pick would seemingly be the starting point … plus the additional cost difference between going from 13 to 2 and 12 to 3, along with three years’ worth of inflation.”
