Alan Saunders of Steelers Now believes the Steelers should target Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Tyler Lockett, but they should wait until after June 1.
“Lockett just restructured his deal with the Seahawks this offseason, which would make a pre-June 1 trade costly to Seattle,” Saunders explained in a statement. “If they dealt Lockett today, the Seahawks would pay a $27.8 million dead cap charge and lose an extra $8.9 million in cap space on top of what is scheduled to cost. However, if they waited until after June 1, a Lockett deal would only have a $13.9 million dead cap charge this season, saving Seattle’s cap in 2024.
$5 million in the room. Lockett would be a bargain for the Steelers, with a guaranteed salary of $4.67 million and roster bonuses of $340,000.
Lockett would undoubtedly be a significant addition for Pittsburgh, adding much-needed depth behind George Pickens, the club’s lone proven receiving skill.
The Steelers traded fellow wide receiver Diontae Johnson to the Carolina Panthers last month, leaving Calvin Austin III as Pittsburgh’s likely No. 2 receiver at the time.
It’s difficult to see the Steelers starting next season with that type of depth chart at the position, so they’ll almost surely add a receiver, either by trade or the NFL Draft. They may potentially add a free agent, though Pittsburgh does not appear to be particularly interested in what remains of the wide receiver market at the present.
ockett was Wilson’s teammate in Seattle for seven years and is coming off a 2023 season in which he caught 79 catches for 894 yards and five scores. Prior to last year, Lockett had four consecutive 1,000-yard seasons, peaking at 1,175 yards in 2021. That was Wilson’s final season with the Seahawks.
