Despite Nick Saban’s refusal to formally name Alabama’s starting quarterback, it appears that Jalen Milroe will fill the vacuum left by Bryce Young.
According to ESPN’s Chris Low, the redshirt sophomore is projected to start Saturday’s season opener against Middle Tennessee State after receiving the majority of first-team reps during preseason workouts, ahead of Tyler Buchner, Ty Simpson, and Dylan Lonergan.
This week’s release of Alabama’s official Week 1 depth chart was highly anticipated since it would provide light on the quarterback position.
Saban told reporters on Monday that he would not release a depth chart.
It causes a lot of distractions for our squad,” Saban stated. “Creates a lot of guys thinking ‘Well this guy won the job, now I’m not gonna get to play,’ or whatever and quite frankly, we don’t need that.”
This happened after Saban criticized people for making too much of depth charts following Alabama’s season-opening victory over Utah State last year.
During his radio broadcast on Thursday (h/t Nick Kelly of the Tuscaloosa News), Saban stated that he told the quarterbacks who will start the game and that they want him “to play well enough so we have an opportunity to play all the guys at the position because that’s important for us.”
Milroe is the most experienced with
Simpson, who was also part of Alabama’s 2021 recruiting class, played in four games last season. Dylan Lonergan is a four-star prospect and the No. 16 overall quarterback in the 2023 class, according to 247Sports.
Buchner transferred to Alabama in April after spending the previous two seasons at Notre Dame. The 20-year-old was the Fighting Irish’s starting quarterback to begin the 2022 season, but a shoulder injury sustained in the second game sidelined him until the Gator
