Following an exciting loss against Tennessee on Friday night at the Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, the women’s tennis team from Auburn University was ousted in the SEC tournament quarterfinals.
Auburn finishes the SEC Championship with a 16-10 record after the loss. Moving forward, the Tigers will watch the selection show on April 29 starting at 5:30 p.m. CT on NCAA.com.
Adeline Flach and Angella Okutoyi defeated Alana Wolfberg and Esther Adeshina 6-1 in the doubles match. After taking an early 3-1 lead, Flach and Okutoyi won their next three games in a row.
The Tigers took a 3-2 lead thanks to breaks from Ariana Arseneault and DJ Bennett, but the Volunteers rallied for a 6-4 victory and the doubles point.
Before taking the first set 6-4, Carolyn Ansari defeated Sofia Cabezas in her first three matches on court one in the singles division. On court five, Flach won the opening set 6-3 after jumping out to an early 3-2 lead. Bennett defeated Elza Tomase to win the first set, while Okutoyi defeated Esther Adeshina in a tiebreaker to win the first set.
In tie breaks, Arseneault and Ava Esposito Cogan both dropped their opening sets. In her second match, Flach outclassed Lauren Anzalotta, winning 6-3, 6-4, and even the score for the team. Following the first set tiebreak victory, Angella Okutoyi won her second set with a straight set victory, defeating Adeshina 7-6 (7), 6-3 to give the Tigers the lead.
On court two, Bennett won her third straight singles match, taking the set 6-4, 7-5 after trailing 5-3 in the first place. On court three, Tennessee won a set thereafter. Ava Esposito Cogan prevailed 6-2 in the second set to force a third set, while Cabezas defeated Ansari in her second set.
