Trade Updates: Lions Move Up, Take First Position in Newest Mock Draft…see more

Texas Christian Horned Frogs offensive tackle Brandon Coleman.

The lengthy wait to find out who the Detroit Lions will select with their first-round selection will finally end on Thursday. There are several directions Brad Holmes could choose to take.
Many of the team’s Draft picks will probably play backup or depth roles in their rookie seasons as a result of the organization using free agency to reorganize their starting lineup.

This is my most recent estimate for the decisions the Lions will make during the three days of the next NFL Draft.

First Round

TRADE: In exchange for choice 21, the Lions send the Miami Dolphins picks 29 and a third-round selection in 2025.

Pick 21: Florida State’s Jared Verse of EDGE

The Lions are in position to select Verse, the running back for Aidan Hutchinson, in the draft. Verse, an Albany transfer, showed the Seminoles that his talent was genuine throughout his two seasons there.

In each of his two seasons with the Seminoles, he recorded nine sacks; in 2023, he recorded 12.5 tackles for loss.

In the end, moving up eight spots is worth the cost of a day two selection the following year and the 29th pick this year. Similar to the role he would play with the Lions, he has had experienced rushing with his hand down in a 4-3 defense.

Phase Two
The Lions decide to bolster their offensive line in the second round. A lot of conjecture has been expressed on this particular position group’s future in light of Frank Ragnow’s injuries and Taylor Decker’s contractual circumstances.

Thus, a player such as Coleman would be a good fit. At TCU, he played guard and tackle, so he could cover Decker, Penei Sewell, Graham Glasgow, and Kevin Zeitler in either position.

Adding young, developing talent at this stage of the Draft would be a smart move, given the injuries that have plagued the Lions’ offensive line in recent years.
