A prestigious school is said to have made contact with the former Tennessee big man Jonas Aidoo, who is currently a highly sought-after player on the transfer portal. Kentucky Sports Radio says it’s Kentucky.
Having made a strong start in Lexington, Mark Pope is attempting to potentially gain some serious momentum by acquiring a player from one of their main competitors.
With one year remaining in his career, Aidoo unexpectedly made his portal debut after Tennessee’s season concluded. His entrance into the portal is confusing because he was scheduled to start for the Volunteers again the following season.
On Thursday, Rick Barnes acknowledged that the decision was unexpected.
“Yes, since he had assured everyone he was okay,” Barnes responded in a rather succinct manner.
After his best-ever season, Aidoo is returning. He averaged 11.4 points while playing 24.7 minutes per game. Aidoo contributed 1.8 blocks and 7.3 rebounds per game. Additionally, the 6-11, 242 pound center has entered the NBA Draft, perhaps merely to get input before the next season.
Aidoo and the Baylor Bears are the subject of a transfer portal prediction already made by Travis Branham of 247Sports. We’ll watch to see if Kentucky’s inclusion modifies it.
With Aidoo and Tobe Awaka both accessing the portal, it is now evident that Tennessee has a need in the position. Awaka may be able to return as a result of Aidoo’s departure, but the Volunteers will probably still need extra bodies in the frontcourt.
