KNOXVILLE, Tenn. Kim Caldwell, the first-year head coach of Tennessee women’s basketball, has announced the acquisition of four exciting staff members. Two of the new hires are SEC graduates with strong credentials in player development and recruitment, while three of the new hires were formerly associate head coaches.
Roman Tubner, a former assistant head coach and recruiting coordinator at Alabama; Gabe Lazo, a former associate head coach and defensive coordinator at Mississippi State; Jenna Burdette, a former associate head coach at Marshall; and Angel Rizor, a former assistant coach at Marshall, will all be joining the Lady Vol program as assistant coaches.
Before the 2023–24 season, Tubner—who has collaborated with Kristy Curry for the past three seasons at Alabama—was elevated to assistant head coach. Selected for the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association’s 30 Under Thirty in 2019 and included in Silver Waves Media’s 2023 50 Most Impactful Assistants, he assisted the Crimson Tide to three straight seasons with 20 or more wins, their best since 1999. In 2023–24, they won 24 games, their best since 1998.
His efforts as recruiting coordinator, which included leading the charge in the signing or commitment of 16 players, were a key cause to that on-court success for UA. Two All-SEC players and one SEC All-Freshman pick were recruited by him, and he helped them develop in
2023–24 and assisted in securing a recruiting class for 2023 that was ranked No. 11 by espnW, No. 25 by 247Sports, and scouted by Brandon Clay.
After earning his psychology degree from Centenary College in Louisiana in 2011 and his master’s in physical education and coaching from Arkansas-Monticello in 2012, Tubner started his coaching career at UAM in 2011 as a graduate assistant. He advanced swiftly to become assistant coach and recruiting coordinator in 2013–14. He served as assistant coach at Arkansas Tech (2014–17), Austin Peay (2017–18), Indiana State (2018–19), UNC Wilmington (2019–21), and Ball State (2020–21) before to joining Alabama in 2021.
