PHILADELPHIA – On Thursday night at the Penn Relays, two Tennessee freshmen distance runners opened their weekend with two outstanding times in the College Women’s 10,000-meter title. In her first meet as a college track athlete, Caroline Lyerly finished fourth in a personal-best time of 33:19.80, while Jillian Candelino placed fifth in 33:30.94.

Lyerly’s time is No. 2 on Tennessee’s all-time list in the event and broke her own freshman record at UT by almost 45 seconds. Candelino placed in the top 10 of the program as well, finishing as the fourth-best performer in Lady Vol history in the 10,000-meter women’s run.

The Lady Vol distance when combined with the times of Emily Covert (33:34.94), Ashley Jones (33:34.96), and Rachel Sutliff (33:34.97)

UP NEXT: Alyssa Raymond will compete in the long jump at the Clark Wood Invitational (Louisville, Ky.) and thirteen distance athletes will compete at the App State Open (Boone, N.C.) on Friday to round up Tennessee’s final weekend of the regular outdoor season.
