The Chicago Cubs, who are at 15-9, have performed about as well as most predicted before the season began. Following a productive but not particularly decisive offseason, the Cubs’ July trade deadline could prove to be a pivotal point in their future.
Shota Imanaga, a left-handed pitcher who has only appeared in four games this season, is their biggest addition. He has the best throwing stats in baseball.
Hector Neris was another tremendous addition to the pitching staff, providing Chicago with a 2023 Houston Astros reliever who was among the best in the league.
This season, Neris has made nine appearances out of the bullpen and has pitched 8.0 innings. With four earned runs given up, his ERA is 4.50. Additionally, his 1.75 WHIP is a considerable improvement over almost every previous season in his career. Neris hasn’t been the same arm they signed for $9 million this offseason, even though it’s early in the season and he could improve.
The Cubs front management needs to add to the bullpen. A competing team always needs bullpen support, even if Neris doesn’t give up another earned run until July.
With a record of 14-12, the Red Sox have performed better than anticipated. But they’re already third in the American League East, 3.5 games behind, in a stacked division.
At the deadline, Jansen would be Chicago’s perfect arm.
He is a seasoned pitcher with above-average stuff that he has pitched in crucial situations. He has pitched seven and a third innings and given up just two earned runs. Jansen, a four-time All-Star, would give this bullpen another reliable arm.
