James Turner, a kicker for the Michigan Wolverines, didn’t have to go far to find his NFL home. The Saline native, who was not selected in the 2024 NFL Draft, is sticking in his hometown and has joined the Detroit Lions.
Turner had a successful career at Michigan, making 18 of his 21 field goal tries in his lone season in Ann Arbor. At 65, he also set a record for the most extra points converted in a single season. At 119 points, he also had the seventh-highest point total in a single season in Michigan football history.
Turner was selected to the 2023 Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week after his performance against Ohio State earned him a spot on the Second Team All-Big Ten.
Turner is highly rated for his accuracy and poise as an NFL prospect. Despite not having a particularly powerful leg, he has made career hits from 50 yards out. At this level, he hopes to carry on with his steady, methodical approach.
