DURHAM – The 16th-seeded Tennessee Volunteers will host the NCAA Tournament First and Second Rounds at Barksdale Stadium for the 21st-ranked Duke women’s tennis team.
In the opening round, the Blue Devils (15-9) will take on East Tennessee State (17-7) at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 4. On May 4 at 1 p.m., the Lady Vols (18-7) will play Murray State (17-5) in the opening round. On Sunday, May 5, at 1 p.m., the victorious teams from the two games will square off in hopes of moving on to the NCAA Super Regional.
The Blue Devils have made 34 appearances, amassed an 80-33 record with a 70.8 winning percentage, had 11 trips to the NCAA Semifinals, and won the 2009 NCAA Championship. In his 28 years as head coach of Duke, Jamie Ashworth has led the Blue Devils to nine semifinal appearances and the 2009 championship. In three of the previous five NCAA Tournament trips, the Blue Devils have made it to the NCAA semifinals.
With Ashworth leading the program, he has a record of 68-25 (.731) in the tournament.
For the NCAA First and Second Rounds, Duke will travel for the sixth time in its history. The Blue Devils have also spent the years 2020–21 in Waco, Texas; 2014–15 in Athens, Georgia; 2009–10 in Charlottesville, Virginia; 2006–07 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina; and 1998–99 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
At other locations, the Blue Devils had an 8-2 record in the NCAA First and Second Rounds.
The East Tennessee State Series
This will be just the second meeting between Duke and East Tennessee State in the series’ history. Duke’s all-time record against the Buccaneers is 1-0; the team won its most recent meeting, 4-0, in 2014.

Investigating East Tennessee State
East Tennessee State leads the Southern Conference with a 7-0 record and an overall record of 17-7. The Buccaneers defeated Furman 4-1 in the Southern Conference Championship on April 20, 2024, in their most recent game.
