#3 [3] Tennessee Loses Heartbreakingly to No. 14 Alabama in Super Regional Game Three

 

KNOXVILLE, Tennessee – At Sherri Parker Lee Stadium on Sunday night, the third-seeded Lady Vols’ seventh-inning comeback was unsuccessful as they lost 4-1 to No. 14 Alabama in game three of the Knoxville Super Regional.

The SEC championship-winning season of Tennessee (44-12) came to an end at home, but not before the team made one last effort to preserve the magic.

UT produced one last rally as McKenna Gibson, Sophia Nugent, and Taylor Pannell all reached base to start the last half inning, but they were behind 4-0 going into the bottom of the seventh inning.

Pinch runner Katie Taylor scored the game’s first and only run for UT after Pannell’s bunt single.

 

After replacing Gottshall in the fourth inning, Karlyn Pickens finished the game with two hits, no walks, and three strikeouts.

 

The Crimson Tide finished the night with five hits, compared to Tennessee’s four.

Payton Gottshall got the start for UT, tossing three innings scattering three hits and allowing four runs on a walk and four strikeouts. The right-hander suffered the loss and ended the season with a 20-5 record.

Kenleigh Cahalan prolonged the inning with a two-out single after Alabama (38-18) had struck out two in the game’s opening two innings. Riley Valentine loaded the bases with back-to-back hit-by-pitches, setting the Tide up 4-0 with a grand slam.

Before the Lady Vols took the field in the first, there was a two-hour and fifty-seven-minute weather delay in game three.
