HOOPS CENTRAL: #16/14 Lady Vols vs. #8/8 LSU - University of Tennessee Athletics

Like any rookie, Ben Joyce suffered setbacks throughout his rookie season despite his incredible skill. Baseball is a humble sport; when pitted against the greatest in the world, even the greatest with the greatest talent can fall short.h

But on Wednesday, the former Tennessee Vols flamethrower returned to the major leagues, and he wasted no time in making the most of his return. With the exception of one fastball, the gifted righty’s gun velocity hit 100 mph or more, with a peak velocity of 103.3 mph.

Oh, yeah, and he did his job, pitching a scoreless eighth inning to hold the Angels’ narrow lead.  He managed to force two ground balls and a fly ball to get out of the inning.  The Angels would go on to win 3-2.

It’s absurd, yet if pitchers aren’t throwing their off-speed pitches for strikes or if batters aren’t positioned correctly, they may time up fastballs at 103 mph. On Wednesday night, though, Joyce recorded the first out of the inning thanks to a precisely placed slider that resulted in a ground ball. It’s where his ability to complement his fastball with useful off-speed stuff will help him become a successful major leaguer.

Joyce had some command troubles in 2023; after having thrown the fastest pitch in collegiate baseball history for the Vols in 2022, he walked nine in ten innings while striking out ten, recording a 5.40 ERA. He was a member of the big league roster in the beginning of June and again at the close of the campaign.

following the Angels’ postseason elimination in September.

We’ll see if Joyce has improved enough to be a valuable member of the Angels’ bullpen in the future. Without a doubt, he possesses the necessary talent to succeed
