WEST HARTFORD, W.Va. It’s finally here—the day that everyone in West Virginia has always looked forward to. The Los Angeles Clippers confirmed earlier today that Jerry West, the greatest athlete in West Virginia state sports history, passed away quietly at home in Los Angeles.
Jerry West, whose name appeared on both the front and back of his Mountaineer basketball outfit, is the person or athlete most associated with the Mountain State.
The legendary reporter Roy McHugh of the Pittsburgh Press reportedly observed, “The Jerry Wests of this world do not come in pairs.”

More than sixty universities had by then offered scholarships to West Virginia, but West Virginia coach Fred Schaus persisted. In the late 1940s, West got to know Schaus through Jack Fleming’s radio coverage of Mountaineer basketball games. He would occasionally pretend to be sleeping by covering his head and tucking the radio under his arm, tricking his mother into believing he was asleep.
Hot Rod Hundley was an established player in Charleston, but West Virginia possessed a level of seriousness and purpose that Hundley did not. The Mountaineers were consistently able to advance out of the Southern Conference under Hundley’s leadership, but the team was never able to go far in the NCAA Tournament.
