Sad News: Philadelphia Phillies fired head coach Rob Thomson…see more
The Philadelphia Phillies never really had to worry about who would be the starting catcher behind the plate during the few seasons when J.T. Realmuto was somewhat healthy. After all, during his time with the Phillies, Realmuto has never missed more than 134 games in a 162-game season, and he is used to managing a demanding workload every year. Because of this, the team never saw the need or urgency to have strong catching depth behind him.
However, Realmuto will be sidelined for at least a month, possibly longer, according on how well his recuperation goes and how much pain he manages to manage following his recent right knee surgery.
Both Stubbs and Marchán have previous Major League Baseball experience; Stubbs spent the last three seasons as the Phillies’ primary backup catcher, and Marchán had a similar role in 2021. Marchán has the more powerful bat but has struggled to stay healthy recently, while Stubbs is perhaps the more defensively responsible of the two with minimal offensive output. Thus, in a sense, their advantages and disadvantages work in tandem to enhance one another. But who would be the next player in line to be called up if something were to happen to either of the players?
