UConn, coach Dan Hurley agree to 6-year, $50 million deal a month after he spurned offer from Lakers - What's Up Newp

Hurley turned down a six-year, $70 million offer to coach the Los Angeles Lakers, but ultimately accepted a six-year, $50 million contract to remain with the Huskies.

Dan Hurley, the head basketball coach of the University of Connecticut men’s team, has accepted a contract extension with the Huskies that will put him among the top paid college coaches, following his rejection of a lucrative job offer from the NBA’s Los Angeles Lakers.

Hurley, who just won his second straight NCAA championship with UConn, agreed to a six-year, $50 million contract that will keep him in the Huskies through the 2029–2030 campaign. The agreement, which Hurley accepted just a month after turning down a six-year, $70 million offer to take over as head coach of the storied Lakers, will take the place of the existing six-year, $32.1 million contract he signed with UConn in June 2023.

Hurley’s base pay of $400,000 will be augmented by $6.375 million for speaking, consulting, and media responsibilities next season. This amount will increase with each contract year, according to a press statement from the university. In addition, he will get an annual retention incentive of $1 million.

UConn President Radenka Maric said in a statement, “Dan Hurley is the best men’s basketball coach in the country and we are delighted that he will continue to call UConn home.” In addition to the remarkable program he has developed over the years and the remarkable back-to-back NCAA titles he and his teams have won, Coach Hurley is an invaluable mentor to our student-athletes, encouraging them to succeed in the classroom and on the court.
