Trending: Ole Miss HC Lane Kiffin Crises SEC Talking Head Paul Finebaum at 2024 SEC Media Days, Saying “I Don’t Know What You Are Good At”

Six SEC teams were ranked in the AP Top 25 at the conclusion of the previous season. The typical suspects—powerhouses Alabama, Georgia, LSU, and Tennessee—were among them. For the second time in three seasons, though, the Ole Miss Rebels and head coach Lane Kiffin are regarded as one of the best in college football. After three mostly successful seasons with the Florida Atlantic Owls, Kiffin was hired by Ole Miss in 2020, and the outcomes have been consistent. The 49-year-old Kiffin’s one-year tenure as head coach of the Tennessee Volunteers was mediocre, leading some in the conference media to doubt the Rebels’ decision to sign him to a big contract. One such person is Paul Finebaum.

Don’t tell Ole Miss Rebels head coach Lane Kiffin that the media’s word means nothing. Kiffin made his Southeastern Conference Media Days debut on Thursday, speaking to none other than top conference contributor Paul Finebaum. The two have a checkered past, with Finebaum ripping Kiffin in 2013 while the latter held the head coaching job with the Finebaum called out Kiffin’s ability to coach at the FBS and NFL level, claiming him a nepotism hire and the “Miley Cyrus” of college football.

In 2021, in Kiffin’s second season with Ole Miss, the frontman confronted Finebaum on his flagship show about his role in USC’s eventual firing of the then 39-year-old. It carried over to 2024 SEC Media Days, with the two again having a sitdown on Thursday.

You had to make a huge splash on College Gameday, and since I know the other person in the room who was watching it with them, they were watching it as well. You called me a joke. On the 2024 SEC Kickoff with Paul Finebaum, Kiffin declared, “I should be fired. I’m the Miley Cyrus of college football coaching.”

Kiffin went on, “But look what happened,” he said. There’s no way I could have worked under Coach Saban. If only a few of these other things hadn’t happened. Thus, thank you for assisting me in getting fired. After being fired by USC, Kiffin found success in 2014 with Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide. As offensive coordinator, Kiffin contributed to the Tide’s College Football Playoff National Championship victory.
