According to Xinhua’s first investigations, the city of Shangluo saw 17 cars and 8 trucks tumble into the river.
Images on state television displayed the water pouring over a portion of the bridge that was half submerged.

Meanwhile, in southwestern Sichuan province, more than 30 people were reported missing on Saturday after a violent thunderstorm caused flash flooding overnight in the town of Ya’an. As of Saturday evening, eight bodies had been recovered, and four people had been rescued without serious injuries, according to local media. The witness, who went by the surname Meng, said that as he approached the bridge, other drivers began “yelling at me to brake and stop the car.” The witness said that a truck in front of him didn’t stop and plunged into the water.
On Friday, state media had reported at least five people dead and eight missing after the rains sparked flooding and mudslides in Shaanxi’s Baoji city.
State television broadcast images of neighbourhoods completely flooded by muddy water, with excavators and residents attempting to clear the damage.

This week’s severe rains also affected Henan, in central China, and Gansu, a semi-desert region bordering Shaanxi.
The beginning of the week saw the equivalent of a year’s worth of rain fall in Nanyang, Henan, according to CCTV.
