NWS verifies that the storms on Monday night produced a record 24 tornadoes….

Chicago In the Chicago and Rockford areas, a string of tornadoes triggered by Monday night’s Derecho has broken previous records.

Two more EF-0 twisters were verified on Friday, one of which made landfall in Broadview and the other in Oak Forest, both in Cook County, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

The extra tornadoes increase the total number of storms that occurred on Monday to 24, exceeding the marks set by the 22 tornadoes that made landfall on June 30, 2014, and March 31, 2023 in the NWS Chicago prediction region.

The following 24 tornado trajectories from Monday’s storms have been confirmed by the NWS; they are given in the order they occurred

 

EF-0 – Byron – Tornado passed through Byron at 7:44 p.m. and produced tree damage across town and blew roofing material off of a car wash.
EF-0 – Davis Junction – Tornado passed through the north side of Davis Junction at 7:58 p.m. and produced a corridor of tree damage.

EF-0 – Southern Winnebago County – At 7:58 p.m., a tornado damaged power lines, trees, and corn farms as it traveled 1.2 miles along Montague Road.
At 8:49 p.m., the EF-1 tornado from Sugar Grove to Aurora made landfall, leaving an 8.4-mile trail behind it.
At 8:52 p.m., a tornado made landfall on EF-0, which runs from Sugar Grove to North Aurora, tracing a 10.1-mile route.

At 8:55 p.m., the tornado on EF-1, which traveled from Yorkville to South Naperville, made landfall. It severely damaged trees and some structures.
At 9:07 p.m., the EF-1 tornado, which traveled from Minooka to Joliet, made landfall and tore a 16.3-mile path, with winds as high as 110 mph.
The tornado path for EF-0, which runs from Western Joliet to Lockport, began in Kendall County at 9:12 p.m. and went through Will County until coming to a halt near I-355 in Lockport.

EF-2 – Channahon to Matteson – Tornado touched down at 9:17 p.m. carving a 28.9-mile path.
EF-0 – Glen Ellyn to Lombard – Tornado touched down near Bryant Avenue at 9:23 p.m. and caused tree damage and some structural damage.
EF-0 – Villa Park Tornado – Tornado started near Kenilworth and Cornell Avenues at 9:29 p.m. and was only on the ground for about 1 minute.
EF- 0 – Manteno – Tornado touched down at 9:36 p.m. and carved a 12.3-mile path with wind speeds reaching up to 80 MPH.
EF-0 – Broadview – Tornado touched down at 9:36 p.m. and carved a .8-mile path with winds speeds reaching up to 85 MPH.
EF-1 – Justice – Tornado touched down near the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal around 9:37 p.m. uprooting several large trees.
